Abstract
Today, the perspective on waste management is changing from simply treating waste to recognizing it as a valuable resource. This study explores the evolving perspective on waste management by treating beer waste as a valuable resource. Prioritizing waste minimization and recycling plans and policies are important steps toward sustainable resource management, helping to promote a circular economy and reduce the extraction of new resources. The purpose of the study is to suggest the possibility of using beer waste, an industrial waste, to produce fashion textiles in order to spread and popularize sustainable types of textile research. To this end, through a literature review on the use of beer waste and the production of actual products using it, the potential of recycling beer waste for use in dyeing and material production with in the fashion industry was studied. Specifically, a theoretical review was conducted on dyeing methods using beer waste and printing methods using silk screens. A textile was developed by applying a printing method using beer waste and foil as materials, and clothing using the developed textile was designed and produced to suggest the possibility of commercializing it into a fashion product. In addition, color fastness and heavy metal contamination tests were conducted on the developed fashion material. As a result of the fabric test of the developed beer lees fashion material, no heavy metal harmful components such as formaldehyde were detected in the organza and chiffon fabrics. In addition, both fabrics showed excellent color fastness to washing, sweat, and light. However, the friction fastness of the chiffon was better than that of the organza, confirming that the chiffon fabric meets the quality standards for manufacturing clothing products. This study has academic significance in suggesting a new type of sustainable material and design method.
