Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze environmental improvement cases in welfare facilities for persons with disabilities and propose a Color Universal Design (CUD) color guideline based on the findings. The analysis targeted four facilities where CUD was applied: Giwon Daycare Center, Didimdol Daycare Center, Paul Workshop, and Gippeunuri Welfare Center. Before the improvements, pre-interviews with users identified preferred colors, inconveniences, and desired changes, which were used to establish improvement goals for each site. An evaluation chart was developed to assess the degree to which CUD principles were implemented, and post-implementation interviews measured user satisfaction. The results showed that user satisfaction with usability and emotional stability improved noticeably. A total of 56 colors used in the environmental improvements—including 4 primary, 30 secondary, 15 accent, and 7 lower-wall colors—were visualized on brightness and saturation graphs to illustrate their distribution. Based on this derived color palette, ten Color Universal Design (CUD) color guidelines were proposed. Key recommendations include: Using warm tones such as orange and yellow, with brightness values between 9.0 and 9.5 and saturation below 0.5, as main colors to foster a bright atmosphere. Utilizing secondary colors with brightness between 6.0 and 9.5 and saturation between 1.0 and 8.5. Applying these guidelines to welfare facility environments is expected to improve usability while fostering a bright, stable, and psychologically reassuring atmosphere. For future research, the study suggests developing a checklist to evaluate how closely improved environments adhere to CUD guidelines. These efforts are expected to help create a more inclusive and supportive society for the elderly, people with disabilities, individuals with low vision, and those with color vision deficiencies.
