Abstract
This study aims to explore the potential for globalization of traditional Korean formal elements through their contemporary reinterpretation in modern art. In an era where boundaries between the past and present, local and global, analog and digital are increasingly blurred, the notion of tradition is no longer fixed but functions as a point of departure for new creative practices among contemporary artists. This paper investigates how traditional Korean visual elements are being reinterpreted within contemporary art and how they might serve as dynamic resources capable of connecting with diverse cultural contexts. Focusing on the works of Kim Young-jun, Choi Na-ri and Choi Jeong-hwa, the study traces how traditional visual languages such as Najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl inlay), Minhwa (folk painting) and Hojakdo (tiger and magpie paintings) are being expanded into modern expressions in distinct ways. These works do not merely restore the old but deconstruct, reassemble and reposition traditional forms or extend them into new dimensions through digital tools. Through installation art and hybrid media, tradition acquires new meaning in contemporary contexts, functioning as a language through which artists communicate with the world. Traditional Korean art today creates a new cultural identity within the global art scene by embodying a contemporary succession of tradition and prompting various aesthetic discourses. In particular, technologies such as NFT, AR and VR liberate traditional imagery and ideas from spatial and temporal constraints, allowing them to exist in radically new forms. This convergence represents not a mere technical fusion but a significant example of expanding both the expressive possibilities of traditional motifs and the narrative potential of contemporary art. This study highlights how traditional Korean formal elements are not confined to the past but, through a dual structure of inheritance and reinterpretation, evolve into competitive cultural assets within contemporary art by embodying creative practices rooted in tradition and resonating with the sensibilities and aesthetics of the present age.
