Abstract
This study aims to explore the formative potential and contemporary applicability of Mokume-gane, a traditional Japanese metalworking technique, through the process of producing a flower vase. Mokume-gane involves the lamination of dissimilar metals, which are then forged, carved, and manipulated to produce unique woodgrain-like surface patterns. Although rooted in traditional metal craft, the technique has recently garnered renewed attention in fields such as jewelry, product design, and sculptural work. Its high artistic value lies particularly in its ability to create natural and organic patterns through the fusion and transformation of metals. Recognizing this potential, the research was conducted to seek more meaningful and practical applications of Mokume-gane. The study first examined the historical origins and craft-based context of the technique, followed by a theoretical analysis of the principles of metal bonding based on their physical and chemical properties. It then closely observed the physical interactions between metals and the surface changes that occur under various heat treatment conditions. Through a series of experiments with different metal combinations and bonding conditions, an efficient production process suitable for a small workshop environment was developed. In particular, by utilizing an oxy-fuel torch for sheet bonding, the study proposed a more accessible and stable method for fabricating Mokume-gane sheets, thereby improving both the convenience and reproducibility of the process. For empirical validation, a flower vase was selected as the practical outcome, and the entire process—from material selection and pattern design to forging, carving, and final form realization—was carried out by the researcher. As a result, the Mokume-gane technique was found to possess both functional and aesthetic value, clearly demonstrating its practical potential and formative versatility within contemporary metalcraft and design.
