Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine how traditional textile craft techniques are practically integrated into the operational strategies of modern fashion brands and to propose their potential expandability and practical implications for the development of Korea's craft industry. To achieve this, the study classifies the strategic application of craft into three key dimensions: material differentiation, regional foundation, and craft-based production processes. It investigates three international brands as case studies—Marrakshi Life (Morocco), Gudrun & Gudrun (Faroe Islands), and Batik Boutique (Malaysia)—based on secondary data including brand websites, designer interviews, exhibitions, media coverage, and academic literature. Marrakshi Life applies traditional Moroccan weaving techniques to zero-waste pattern design while supporting local artisans through employment and technical training. Gudrun & Gudrun restores fading wool and knitting industries by collaborating with women-led artisan communities and embracing designs rooted in Faroese culture and landscape. Batik Boutique combines Malaysia’s traditional batik dyeing with initiatives in employment, education, and welfare, operating as a social enterprise. Despite differing in techniques—such as weaving, knitting, and dyeing—all three brands embed traditional crafts within brand identity, community engagement, and sustainable practice. These cases illustrate the strategic value of traditional crafts in contemporary brand operations. The study concludes that craft-oriented approaches can serve as effective strategies for addressing challenges in Korea’s textile craft sector, including limited industrialization, weakened artisan networks, and fragmented production systems.
