Abstract

This study examines, from a diachronic perspective, the formation and development of ceramic art exhibitions in modern and contemporary Korea, with particular focus on the background and significance of the East–West Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition organized for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. As artistic institutions that reflect the aesthetic sensibilities and socio-cultural climate of their time, ceramic exhibitions have served as indicators of shifting trends and discourses in the art world. Accordingly, this study outlines how exhibition formats and content evolved— from Korea’s opening to the West, through the Liberation period, the post-Korean War era, the 1960s–70s, and the 1980s—while comparing major characteristics and issues of each period. Within this trajectory, the East–West Contemporary Ceramic Art Exhibition (1988), Korea’s first sculptural ceramics exhibition and an international exchange show, brought together 105 artists from Korea and seven Western countries to present key developments in contemporary sculptural ceramics. The exhibition marked a turning point that moved beyond the dichotomy of tradition and modernity, highlighting the contemporary artistic potential of ceramics through dialogue with the international ceramics community and comparisons of sculptural vocabularies. This study thus reconstructs the trajectory of twentieth-century Korean ceramic exhibitions by grouping major developments by decade and identifies the 1988 exhibition as a structural watershed. It further emphasizes the role of exhibitions as cultural and artistic frameworks that articulate the spirit and discourses of their time, and hopes to provide a foundation for future research on ceramic art exhibitions.
