Abstract

This study examined the effects of temporal distance on consumer's attitudes, such as perceived risk, preference and purchase intention of new products based on the construal level theory(CLT). In particular, this study intends to test empirically about the interaction effects of new product types(Radical New Product vs. Incremental New Product) and consumer's regulatory focus(Promotion vs. Prevention) on the relationship between temporal distance and consumer's new product attitudes. In short, this research aimed to focus on the moderating role of the new product types when the consumer consider buying new products. CLT suggests that there are differences in mental representation of event(eg; new products purchase) in the present versus the future and describes the relation between psychological distance and the extent to which people's thinking about objects and events(abstract vs. concrete/ feasibility vs desirability). When the consumer intends to buy something, (S)he thinks about the product differently according to the point of purchase. As (s)he considers buying in distant future, (s)he thinks abstractly(not concretely) and pays attention to desirable things(not feasible things). So, this research hypothesized the consumer considering to buy new product in near future perceive risk more, like less and intend to purchase less than in distant future(H 1). In addition to this hypothesis, this research also suggests there is interaction effect of new product type between the temporal distance and consumer attitudes(perceived risk, preference and purchase intention)(H 2). In the first experiment that manipulated the temporal distance(one week and six months), this study supported H 1, which was consistent with existing findings. Based on this, we extended the experiment regarding to INP and RNP respectively and supported H 2. For more specific, results from two experiments and extended analysis suggested that the effect of temporal distance on the attitudes of new product(perceived risk, preference and purchase intention) depends on the type of new products, which means the effect of temporal distance on the perceived risk(preference and purchase intention) is greater or larger for RNP than INP.
