Abstract
Time is an inherently invisible and abstract concept, and people have used variety ways torepresent it. Therefore, even the same amount of time can be perceived differently by individualsdepending on how the time frame is represented, and this time frame has a significant impacton consumer evaluations of products whose perceived value can vary significantly over time. This study aims to examine the effects of different time frames (duration vs. date) of near-expiration on perceived time (Study 1) and further on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions, and in order to identify the psychological mechanisms that mediate these effects(Study 2). Inaddition, we aimed to verify whether consumers' temporal distance, as influenced by the timeframe, interacts with spatial distance to significantly affect consumers' decision-making processwhen purchasing near-expiration products by using product origin information (Study 3). First,in Study 1 and 2, we examine whether presenting the time frame as a duration (vs. date) inexpiration dates leads consumers to perceive a longer product expiration date and mediatingeffect that increase in the perceived product benefit, which in turn increases purchase intention. Second, in Study 3, we investigate how varying the time frame for expiration (duration vs. date) and the product's origin (distant vs. close) together influence consumers' perceivedbenefits and purchase intentions. We find that while the close origin resulted in higher purchaseintentions when the expiration is duration frame, consistent with Study 2, but distant origin showed no difference, suggesting that perceived time can be influenced by spatial distance aswell as time frame. In conclusion, we find that the time frame effect is highly significant fornear-expired product, whose value is strongly influenced by time, and we also suggest thatspatial distance may influence perceived time in relation to construal level theory. Based onthese findings, we discuss the theoretical and practical implications of time frames and suggestdirections for future research.
