Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of CSR activity. This paper analyzes the effects of information presentation mode in terms of message concreteness. A 2(in-group vs. out-group) * 2(information presentation mode: abstract vs. concrete) between subject factorial design was used in this study. Participants of this study were college students(N=124) who were randomly assigned by conditions. The findings indicate that the effects of concrete description(unpacking mode) were better for in-group than out-group evaluation. Also, the results were likely to be mediated by participant’s willingness to forgive the company about the negative accident. This study confirmed in-group bias of subjects when they evaluate CSR activity after a negative accident/scandal occurred. Such results implicate that marketers of a firm should strategically take care of in-group perception from consumers. While this study only examined CSR in a related domain(activity about environment) via newspaper accounts, it is necessary to confirm the variation of domain relevance or source credibility of CSR activity presentation. The present research investigated the unpacking effect which was mainly handled in statistics and psychology in the perspective of marketing especially for CSR domain.
