Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the association between numbers (odd vs. even) and gender, and to find out whether the number-gender association effect can influence consumers’ product gender perception in the context of alphanumeric brand names. In Study 1, through experiments conducted on Korean female participants, it was confirmed that there exists a number-gender association (odd-masculinity and even-femininity) at both implicit and explicit levels. In Study 2, consumer judgments pertaining to product gender were found to vary depending on the type of numbers (odd vs. even) used in the alphanumeric brand name. The brand name containing an odd number was judged to be suitable for a men’s product, and the brand name containing an even number was judged to be suitable for a women’s product. In addition, there was a significant difference in participants’ expectations as to other male and female consumers’ attitudes toward the product depending on the type of numbers (odd vs. even) used in the name. This study shows that the association between numbers and gender reported in previous Western studies is not limited to a specific country or culture by observing similar associative patterns in Korean women’s thinking as well. In addition, this study confirms that the association between numbers and gender can affect consumers’ perceptions and judgments related to product gender in the context of brand names and suggests a marketing implication that numbers can be used as a signaling element for product gender in brand naming. Finally, the limitations of this research and the directions of future studies are discussed.
