Abstract
Due to the recent surge in the domestic automobile market, the time interval between new car launches is getting shorter. In this context, this research investigates the cannibalization effect in the domestic automobile market and its trend. The study uses monthly sales data and time series analysis of Hyundai Motor Company and Kia Motors, the leading automobile companies in Korea, to predict the sales volume of existing products assuming no new products are launched in the market. The difference between the predicted sales volume of the existing product and the actual sales volume of the new product is defined as the cannibalization amount. The cannibalization effect is analyzed by comparing it to a set of product characteristics. The findings show that the cannibalization effect in the domestic automobile market is increasing over time. Moreover, the cannibalization effect was greater for hybrid vehicles compared to gasoline and electric vehicles, as analyzed by considering the transition of vehicle characteristics such as fuel. However, there was no discernible trend in the cannibalization effect according to the price of the car. The practical policy implications of this study are significant for domestic automakers who plan to launch new products. The findings can guide decision-making processes such as determining the timing of new product launches or adjusting the discontinuation of existing products to account for consumers' cannibalistic tendencies.
