Abstract
Previous research on the impact of mortality salience on consumer response has primarily focused on the mere presence or absence of mortality salience. This study aims to advance the existing research by examining the moderating effect of the type of mortality salience on consumers' purchase intentions based on the type of product. Specifically, this research categorizes types of mortality salience according to the disasters that trigger them and divides product types into experiential goods and material goods to investigate their effects on consumers' purchase intentions. For material goods, there will be no difference in purchase intention between situations where mortality salience is heightened by human-made disasters (loss of control) and natural disasters (loss of control). However, for experiential goods, purchase intentions will be higher in situations where mortality salience is triggered by human-made disasters than by natural disasters. To test these hypotheses, a 2x2 factorial design was applied, with mortality salience type (mortality salience induced by human-made disasters vs. mortality salience induced by natural disasters) and product type (experiential goods vs. material goods). The experimental results empirically confirmed that for experiential goods, purchase intentions were higher in the case of mortality salience induced by human-made disasters than in the case of natural disasters. However, for material goods, there was no difference in purchase intention based on the type of disaster. This study suggests that consumers' purchase intentions can vary depending on the type of mortality salience and product type. Consequently, this study can provide implications for experiential goods marketing communication in situations where mortality salience is heightened due to COVID-19 and in situations where it is alleviated due to the "With Corona" era.
