Abstract
Consumers are often exposed to stimuli that are related to death, which can affect their behavior unconsciously. The present study is related to this issue and is based on the literature on terror management theory as a sort of priming effect. The effects of mortality salience on the preference for vice/virtue products and ethical consumption attitude were examined. In the first experiment, the preference for products was measured before and after exposure of the same group to mortality salience stimulation. A paired t-test, among the four vice products, confirmed that the preference for vice products decreased significantly after exposure to mortality salience stimulation in hamburgers and ice cream. Among the four virtue products, the preference for salad increased. In the first experiment, the participants were divided into two groups: an experimental group that presented mortality salience stimulation and a control group. The independent sample t-test showed no significant difference from the first experiment that examined the change in preference before and after exposure to the same group. The difference in ethical consumption attitude depending on exposure to mortality salience stimulation was also examined. Consequently, the group that was exposed to mortality salience stimulation showed a significantly more positive ethical consumption attitude than the one that was unexposed did. Finally, the implications and limitations of the study were suggested.
