Abstract

Experiencing loss is a part of life, and it often arises from personal challenges in physical and mental health, financial status, and social relationships. This study aims to investigate how different generations cope with personal life loss and how it influences their consumption choices. By considering the cognitive and emotional traits of younger and older generations, we examine how perceived life loss impacts their choice patterns in two product categories through two experiments. According to the results of the two experiments, first, middle-aged and older consumers tend to prefer safe alternatives like low-risk financial instruments over high-risk ones when experiencing personal loss (Experiment 1). Additionally, they display a consistent orientation which they avoid dissimilar extended brands (Experiment 2). In contrast, younger consumers tend to prefer more risky options when experiencing personal loss (Experiment 1), or show no change in their choice patterns regardless of their loss experience, exhibiting inconsistent choice behavior (Experiment 2). These findings provide a deeper understanding of the factors that drive consumption behavior across different generations, which can help companies develop customized marketing strategies that reflect generational differences.
