Abstract
On investigation of the appearance process and the regional characterization of roof-end tiles with the composite designs in Koguryo, I come to two conclusions: (1) Koguryo’s roof-end tiles with the composite design were appeared in close connection with the roofend tiles with dividing line lotus design, (2) Koguryo’s roof-end tiles with the composite design were prevailed in Pyungyang area only. After the transfer of the capital to Pyangyang, roof-end tiles with dividing lines branched into roof-end tiles with composite designs and roof-end tiles with non-dividing lines. Especially the roof-end tiles with composite designs had independent individual designs in the face of roof-end tiles. As these independent individual designs couldn’t be derived from lotus petal designs, I guess that the main cause of the appearance of these independent individual designs must be inner factor. And the lotus flower in roof-end tiles with lotus design embodied lotus bud not lotus petal, that it’s shape was expressed in stereoscopic. Therefore the roof-end tiles with lotus design were appeared as independent individual designs from the beginning, and this tradition became the basis to develop to composite designs. The composite design roof-end tiles with carved-in-line lotus flower also, like carvedin-relief lotus flower, expressed individual lotus bud. And although the basic form is 4+4 type of carved-in-relief + carved-in-line lotus flower, they could be divided into lotus composite design and honeysuckle composite design on account of their character of independence. After the transfer of the capital to Pyungyang, dividing lines were disappeared and the appearance of lotus changed from apricot stone type to carved-in-line lotus type at the same time. Then the carved-in-line lotus combine with the roof-end tiles with composite designs and linear lotus combine with the roof-end tiles with non-dividing line. After the middle of 5th century in Pyungyang area, after all, the roof-end tiles with dividing line which were prevailed model traditionally coexisted with the roof-end tiles with composite design and non-dividing line which were appeared newly. In the process the modes of roof-end tiles were changed gradually. But, in Ji’an area the roof-end tiles with composite design and non-dividing line were adopted selectively. Although, some of the roof-end tiles with non-dividing line which combine with linear lotus were adopted in Ji’an area, the roof-end tiles with composite design were not adopted. While the roof-end tiles with non-dividing line were prevailed in Ji’an area, the roof-end tiles with dividing line were disappeared gradually in the early 6th century. In conclusion, the roof-end tiles with non-dividing line were prevailed in Pyungyang and Ji’an area at the same time. On the other hand, the roof-end tiles with composite design were restricted to Pyungyang area until late Koguryo Dynasty. So it may be concluded that the roof-end tiles in Koguryo were used in the dualistic structure of Pyungyang and Ji’an area.
