Abstract

Recently, generative AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, have infiltrated the field of academic research much faster than anticipated. Tasks that researchers traditionally found challenging, such as drafting initial manuscripts or conducting tedious literature reviews, have become significantly easier. However, the use of generative AI does not bring solely positive outcomes. Major concerns have arisen, particularly regarding the potential for plagiarism and copyright infringement. It is extremely challenging to discern whether AI-generated text constitutes plagiarism. Traditional plagiarism detection software often fails to accurately identify such cases, and AI-generated content, subtly combining existing materials, can unknowingly expose researchers to accusations of plagiarism. Furthermore, determining copyright ownership and authorship for AI-generated content poses additional complexities. Legally, AI systems cannot be recognized as 'authors,' meaning that when researchers incorporate AI-generated material into their manuscripts, this usage typically constitutes an ethical violation rather than a punishable legal offense in terms of plagiarism; however, copyright infringement is an issue that carries explicit legal responsibility, and researchers must clearly understand this distinction. Although academic journals and institutions worldwide have rapidly introduced guidelines on AI use, these guidelines vary significantly, resulting in confusion among researchers in practice. Ultimately, the current approach of addressing these problems only after issues arise is inadequate to keep pace with rapid advancements in AI technology. Therefore, there is now a pressing need to clearly disclose AI usage transparently, and explicitly acknowledge that ultimate responsibility for research outcomes lies with human researchers. Additionally, practical and clear ethical guidelines that researchers can realistically adhere to should be established, alongside proactive educational initiatives designed to heighten researchers' accountability. Finally, it is crucial to establish common ethical standards not only domestically but internationally. If academia, both domestically and abroad, communicates and collaboratively formulates practical standards applicable in the field, research integrity and ethical standards can be successfully maintained even in the era of AI.
