Abstract
This article sets a research direction to overcome the difficulty in reading the chronology of the Samguk Sagi (History of the Three Kingdoms) in terms of the year-month notation, and is a restoration study that compares the diplomatic records of the Northern Wei and Southern and Northern Dynasties in the “Goguryeo Annals” with the historical books of the Southern and Northern Dynasties to reveal the entry and exit situation of the year-month records and corresponds the month names and year-month-day records that are not in the “Goguryeo Annals.” The diplomatic records in the “Goguryeo Annals” amount to 142 in total, including 110 from the Northern Dynasties and 32 from the Southern Dynasties. When these were compared with 11 types of Chinese historical materials, the integrated diplomatic records were analyzed to be 125 for the Northern Dynasties and 55 for the Southern Dynasties, for a total of 180. A total of 118 records of date were detected (81 in the North and 37 in the South). The Southern and Northern Dynasties had different calendars, making solar calendar conversion difficult. Through such a calendar-based review, these lunar dates were converted to the solar calendar in their entirety to aid in the interpretation of events during this period. In this process, the records of tribute in July 472 during the reign of King Jangsu, tribute in the intercalary month of August 488, and tribute in October 507 during the reign of King Munja in the Annals of Goguryeo were identified as traces of the Northern Wei calendar, and the record of the investiture of King Pyeongwon in February 562 was considered to be traces of the Northern Qi calendar. Also, although the "Goguryeo Annals" only says that King Jangsu died in December 491, when compared with the "Book of Wei" and the "Zizhi Tongjian," the date of death is compressed to December 5 or at least early December between December 1 (January 15, 492) and December 5 (January 19, 492). In this way, the comparison tables of diplomatic records developed and attached in this paper are expected to greatly improve the convenience of data access and the usability of period information for future data interpretation in this field.
