Abstract

This paper intends to describe the systematic aspects of polysemy patterns using generative rules. The present study classifies polysemous English nouns into several semantic types and demonstrates the mechanism in which a noun realizes its meaning in a given sentence. In this process, the study makes use of Pustejovsky's theory on generative lexicon. Polysemous nouns grouped into the same type will generally share the same framework of semantic construction. This is the very reason why nouns in the same group realize meanings in the same fashion in the sentences. This approach turns out to be useful as far as it can predict the meaning a noun will assume eventually.
