Abstract
It is obvious to speakers that the meanings of a polysemous expression are related to each other and polysemy is regular. This paper intends to describe the systematic aspects of polysemy patterns, using generative rules. In the theory of Generative Lexicon, polysemy is not handled by the enumeration method, the traditional means of description in lexicography. Instead, it uses various generative mechanisms such as type coercion, co-composition and selective binding. Such generative devices operate on rich lexical representations incorporating event structure, argument structure and qualia structure. This paper also examines three theoretical approaches-the Classical, the Prototypical, and the Relational-and shows that these approaches can not provide an appropriate analysis to the regular polysemy.
