Abstract

On the assumption that polysemization is a progress in which the meaning of a word acquires a series of related meanings, polysemant is a word possessing polysemy through polysemization, and polysemic phenomenon is the various phenomena occurred in relation to polysemant, the purpose of this study is to examine two phenomena of polysemant among its various appearances. One is that monosemy has the characteristics of polysemant and the other is that a meaning of polysemy in polysemant acquires another polysemy additionally. The study also aims to solve the two problems raised through the polysemic phenomena: is it possible that only central meaning and marginal meaning are able to explain the meaning of polysemant, and are there only one central meaning in polysemant?
