초록

Phonetically different sounds in the same category of a phoneme in a source language can be substituted with different phonemes when they are borrowed into another language, especially according to their position in a syllable. This paper explores the onset-coda asymmetry in Korean adapted forms of English loanwords and tries to reanalyze the status of Korean lenis stops as the most unmarked forms among the three-way contrast in stop sounds. Whether the English stops are in onset positions or coda positions determines the Korean adapted forms even if the English sounds are treated as the same phonemes. Based upon the phonetic and phonological features of the borrowed words from English, this paper also reinterprets coda neutralization in Korean and doubts the hypothesis that the most unmarked forms in Korean stops or fricatives are lenis or lax sounds. This paper shows that the unmarkedness of Korean lenis stops is not based on their acoustic and phonetic characteristics that differentiate themselves from aspirated or fortis stops. Rather, the unmarkedness of Korean lenis stops is supported by extra-phonetic evidence such as borrowing processes or language acquisition. In addition, so called ‘Korean coda neutralization’ can be explained within the framework of Feature Geometry. Three-way contrast of Korean stops and affricates and two-way contrast of Korean fricatives can be interpreted using feature geometry and underspecification. Finally, while there has been a suggestion that the underlying form of an unreleased alveolar stop in coda position [t] must be /s/, no evidence to support it has been offered. This article shows the evidence not only in Korean phonology but in synchronic linguistic data
