초록
A. Lane, a private school teacher in east London, is remembered for his publication in 1700 of A Key to the Art of Letters. The present study reveals the organization of the grammar and examines Lane’s grammatical views on the writing of the grammar and innovative educational programs for the nation through a close reading of the front-matter of the grammar in light of the 17-18th century zeitgeist. Then, it elucidates specific grammatical systems and descriptions that the grammar provides. Ultimately, the study, based on these considerations, investigates several intrinsically modern aspects of Lane’s grammar and then defines the status and role occupied by the grammar among 18th century English grammars.
Abstract
