초록
Walking a middle path between prescriptive and descriptive positions and advocating both the fourfold word class system and a vernacular terminology, Ann Fisher, ahead of her time, not only standardized proper English usage in the 18th century but also presented a large variety of innovative teaching and schooling methods suitable for some grammatical items in her A New Grammar (1750). The present study elucidates these major characteristics of Fisher’s grammar as a school grammar in view of the early English grammatical convention and furthermore offers a new insight into the status of her grammar to inaugurate a new era of school grammars in the history of English grammar writing, which became a source of imitation for later grammarians. Thus, her grammar should be necessarily regarded as the most significant pedagogical grammar in the early 18th century, and her status in the history of grammar writing should be revised to appropriately reflect such a contribution.
