A Study of the Necessity for the Revision of Maxims of Conversation - Through the Case Study of the University Students’ Embarrassing Conversation-

This study is to suggest the revision of maxims of conversation through the analysis of the questionnaire about the unpleasant violation of conversation among the university students. The violation of maxims of conversation is widespread in all around the university campus and even in class there have been lots of embarrassed communication between students and professors. As a result of the investigation of the questionnaire, I need to revise the maxims of conversation to explain the various cases which we can not analyse with present maxims of conversation. In order to do that, I suggested interactional language function which emphasizes social relationships and focuses on the person rather than on the information. And my final suggestion is that on a first day of class professors should explain maxims of conversation and so prevent the unpleasant conversational situations in advance which may occur afterwards in a class.
