이 연구는 지역적 특징과 문제를 기반으로 교과 내용뿐만 아니라 학생과 학교 및 지역사회의 균형, 통합, 연계에 중점을 둠으로써 홀리스틱 교육의 관점과 일맥상통하는 지속가능성 교육의 대표적인 국가의 하나인 호주의 사례를 분석하였다. 이를 위해 호주의 지속가능성 교육의 형성 과정을 살피고, 이의 양대 축이라 할 수 있는 국가교육과정과 지속가능 학교 기구의 특징을 교과교육의 내용 및 실행 사례와 함께 검토하였다. 호주 지속가능성 교육은 환경교육과 글로벌교육에 토대를 두고 있으며, 2008년 멜버른 선언을 통해 국가교육과정에 반영되었다. 국가교육과정에서는 범교과 우선사항으로서 지속가능성을 선정하고 모든 교과에서 반드시 통합하여 다루도록 하였으며, 지속가능 학교 기구에서는 지속가능성 교육의 전학교적 접근을 위하여 다양한 지원책을 각 급 학교에 제공하였다. 이에 따른 한국의 지속가능발전 교육에 대한 시사점으로는 교육과정뿐만이 아닌 전 학교적 접근의 중요성, 각 교과의 특징을 반영한 지속가능성 교육의 재구조화 등을 제시할 수 있다.
Abstract
This study analyzed Australian case which is one of the best representative nations of ESD based on regional characteristics and problems similar to Holistic approach. Through this study, history of Australian sustainability education was reviewed, then the contents of subject-matter education in the national curriculum and AuSSI with its own cases were analyzed. Australian sustainability education is based on environmental education and global education. This was integrated into the national curriculum by 2008 Melbourn Declaration. Sustainability as a the cross-curriculum priority should be integrated into every subject in the national curriculum. AuSSI provided various support to each school to implement whole school approach for sustainability education. Finally the importance of whole school approach as well as national curriculum and reconstructing sustainability education within each subject characteristics could be presented as implications to ESD in Korea.
