연민(淵民)의 기록을 통해 본 외재(畏齋) 정태진(丁泰鎭)의 표상

Abstract

Oejae Jung Tae-jin(畏齋 丁泰鎭, 1876-1959) was a person who was a mentor of Yeonmin Lee Ga-won(淵民 李家源, 1917-2000) for a long time and had given the biggest influence on building a foundation of Yeonmin’s study. After Oejae’s death, Yeonmin had collected his letters and compiled Anthology of Oejae(畏齋文集), also, written autobiography of Oejae. Hence, this paper is aimed at investigating how Yeonmin had remembered his mentor, Oejae, by finding the figure of him according to the record of Yeonmin. Yeonmin defined Oejae as “Gyeongsa(經師)”, which means he was a mentor handing the sacred book down. According to Yeonmin and Oejae’s letters, in large part, we could figure out the content about asking a study of the sacred book. Oejae always had sent a letter to give a realization the essence of study whenever Yeonmin had lived apart from him and studied from afar. Also, he was a most beloved mentee whom Oejae usually had missed for not studying together. Yeonmin, however, evaluated Oejae’s study as “Jongmil(宗密)”, which means to study the essence and be meticulous to it. And Yeonmin’s attitude toward the study had been inherited from Oejae’s “Jongmil(宗密)”. Furthermore, Yeonmin evaluated Oejas’s poem as having Toegye’s style. According to Okryusanjangsihwa(玉溜山莊詩話), the exchange of Oejae’s Maehwa poems is introduced. When Yeonmin had gotten the exchange of Oejae’s Maehwa poems for a long time, he came up with Toegye’s one. He regarded Oejae’s poem as having remained Toegye’s style as it was. In his poem, Yeonmin felt Oejae’s firm will never given up for a long time, which drove him greatly admire Oejae. When it comes to Yeonmin’s personality, it had better understand that evaluation of Oejae is objective one regardless of personal relationship.
