Abstract
The achievements and also learning and virtue of Sir Yeonmin Lee Ga-won (1917~2000), one of the 1st generation scholars on Chinese classics after the emancipation, are absolutely noticeable when we consider the fact that Yeonmin-hak was established to succeed to Toegye-hak, Seongho-hak, and Dasan-hak and the society was founded to study him. Yeonmin’s superb academic outcome and influence were, of course, due to his individual backbreaking efforts, but the teachings and training from his mentors and friends are also indispensable. Yeonmin was taught and also encouraged and expected a lot by many mentors in his hometown, Andong, from his childhood. Among those mentors, Oejae Jeong Tae-jin (1876~1956) was very special. Before six, Yeonmin left his mother to be with Oejae and then read materials and continue the relationship between a teacher and a pupil. According to the funeral oration of Oejae, Yeonmin confessed, “It has been 20 or so years after the war for me to study with this mentor, and it was the longest.” He also added, “I was loved by him the most.” Through academic questions and answers, Oejae Jeong Tae-jin taught Yeonmin Lee Ga-won about Tao (道) to reach righteous sciences. To Yeonmin who was in the process of reading Mencius then, he taught the right path to sciences to value Chinese classics adhering to neo-Confucianism ideal traditionally as well as thoroughly. Going through the period of upheaval changing from modern to contemporary times, however, Yeonmin was also taught by other mentors like Byeon Yeong-man or Jeong In-bo and showed even keener interest in literature than in Chinese classics, which led to noteworthy achievements, too. Playing crucial roles in translating the classics into Korean, he contributed partly in the initial period of modernizing the classics. In conclusion, although there was not inconsiderable opinion gap between the teacher and pupil about the paths of sciences, Yeonmin still valued Chinese classics with passion, and it is deemed that this must be attributed to the absolute influence of Oejae Jeong Tae-jin who was his mentor of Chinese classics.
