근대신문 소재 명소고적과 기담 -『황성신문』을 중심으로-

『황성신문(皇城新聞)』은 폐간 직전(1909∼1910년) 해외 단편기사 및 국내 시사단평 등 다양한 연재물들을 동시다발적으로 발표하여 주변국에 대한 상황과 자국의 선별과제들을 확인할 수 있도록 하였다. 그러나 「명소고적(名所古蹟)」(1909.7.3.∼10.23.)에서 살펴볼 수 있는 역사적 장소나 인물, 사건에 대한 주제의식들은 동 시기 발표된 여타 연재기사들과 이질적인 면모를 보인다. 그동안 『황성신문』에 대해 수많은 연구가 이루어져 왔지만 「명소고적」에 대한 논의는 전무한 상태인데, 국내 명소(名所)에 대한 소개에 초점을 맞춘 다소 평이한 주제의 연재물로 여겨져 왔기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 「명소고적」은 당시 집필진들이 표명하고자 했던 주제의식과, 언론관 및 시기에 따른 논조의 변화들을 직간접적으로 확인할 수 있는 자료이다. 또한 다양한 이칭의 편명 기사들과 그 속에 담긴 기이한 일화들은 당시 집필진들이 참고했던 문헌들에 대한 추적과 함께, 동시기 출현했던 다양한 서사문학과의 관련성을 고찰하는 데에도 중요한 단서가 될 수 있다. 선행연구에서는 『황성신문』이 1908년을 기점으로 기존 역사 관련 연재물들이 게재되지 못했음을 언급한 바 있다. 그러나 「명소고적」은 명백히 국내 역사 관련 유적(遺蹟)을 다루고 있으며 여러 이칭의 연재물 또한 다양한 역사적 인물들을 소개하고 있어, 일정 부분 재고가 필요하다. 따라서 본고에서는 1908년 이후 『황성신문』에 발표된 국내 명소와 고적, 역사 등을 다룬 게재물의 면모와 특징 및 함의하는 의미 등에 대해 「명소고적」을 중심으로 논의하였다. 그 과정에서 여러 인물군의 기담(奇談)을 다룬 이칭의 편명 기사들에 주목하고, 이를 통해 표명하고자 했던 주제의식을 살펴보았다. 본 연구를 통해 근대 신문에 실린 연재기사들의 다양한 결을 확인하고, 그 의미들을 검토할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대한다.
Abstract
Just before its closure (1909-1910), to enable its readers to realize the situations of neighboring countries and the major tasks of the Korean Empire, the Hwangseong Shinmun simultaneously published various serials such as short overseas articles and brief comments on domestic current affairs. However, the theme consciousness on historical places, people, and events covered in Myeongsogojeok (07.03.1909- 10.23.1909) exhibits some differences from other articles published in the same period. Numerous studies have investigated the Hwangseong Shinmun, but there has been no discussion on Myeongsogojeok as it has been considered a newspaper serial about rather common topics focusing on introducing domestic attractions. Nevertheless, Myeongsogojeok can directly or indirectly confirm the view in press, change of tone with time, and theme consciousness its editors wanted to express. In addition, the same serial articles under various different titles and their bizarre anecdotes can be an important clue to not only tracking the literature referenced by the editors, but also considering the mutual influence between various narrative works that emerged in the same period. Some previous studies mentioned that the Hwangseong Shinmun did not cover existing historical serials after 1908. However, as Myeongsogojeok clearly dealt with domestic historical relics and the same serial articles under different titles also introduced various historical figures, previous research needs to be reconsidered. Therefore, this study discusses the aspects, characteristics, and implications of the articles dealing with domestic attractions, historical relics and events, and so on published in the Hwangseong Shinmun since 1908. Attention is paid to the serial articles under different titles that covered the bizarre anecdotes of ordinary people, and the theme consciousness the editors intended to express through the articles is then discussed. This study will be an opportunity to identify the various shades of serial articles published in modern newspapers and to examine their meanings.
