근대신문 소재 해외 풍속기사 연구－『황성신문』의 「세계기문」을 중심으로－

Abstract

This study focuses on Segyegimun which lasted for about nine months from March 11, 1909 to December 3, 1909. (139 episodes in total) Each article in Segyegimun shows the views of intellectuals of those days on neighboring countries and enlightening discourses that they tried to develop. There has been no discussion about the brief articles about foreign countries pubslished in the Hwangseongsinmun. The consideration about the articles, including Segyegimun, is a prior task to understand the overall tone of the Hwangseongsinmun, its transitional aspects, and the tendency of the press around the time of the annexation of Korea and Japan. This study first looks into the serialization of Segyegimun and the characteristics of its articles, and then examines the background of publishing brief articles about foreign countries serially. In the process, this study discusses the association and distinction by comparing them to Saminpilji, a widely used world geography textbook. Next, in classifying the articles by continent, their characteristics and enlightening discourses are analyzed in this study. This study probes the aspects that Segyegimun tried to instruct with interesting articles about customs of foreign continents and countries, and contemplates the planning which Hwangseongsinmun tried to promote the people's modern consciousness. In addition, this study examines other articles about foreign countries in Damchong and Jindam, which continued serialization even after the end of the serialization of Segyegimun until the closing of the Hwangseongsinmun. The distinction between them and Segyegimun is also confirmed by inspecting their titles and the characteristics of the articles. Through this study, it is expected that we can identify the intention, direction, and change of the serial articles about foreign countries in Hwangseongsinmun.
