18․19세기 별본(別本) 『곤여외기(坤輿外記)』의 독서 양상과 그 의미

Abstract

This thesis examined the process of content analysis of the new Kunyu waiji edition clarified the process accepted by scholars living around Seoul during the 18th and 19th centuries, and contemplated its academic implications. The new Kunyu waiji edition is a world geography that extracts the second volume from the anthropo-geography part of Kunyu tushuo and Zhifang waiji, and it is not only the original script of Kunyu tushuo. The new edition of Kunyu waiji is different from Kunyu tushuo which is, nevertheless, also known as Kunyu waiji edited by Ferdinand Verbiest. The new edition has about 3,800 characters, which is only one-tenth compared to Kunyu tushuo, which has about 36,000 characters. Zhifang waiji and Kunyu tushuo were described in the classification method in this study as containing geographic information for each continent and country following the western system of geography knowledge. However, its category name matches the theme of Kunyu waiji, and the method to fill the article thereunder comes from the traditional description method. The compilers of Zhifang waiji and Kunyu tushuo introduced the urban development and integrated the education system of Europe, and it was premised to display the excellence of western culture serve the descriptive purpose that the China was not the only civilization by arranging the enabling navigation technology and providing massive quantities of information related to geography and civilization. However, the compiler of Kunyu waiji removed the forementioned premises and summarized only the exotic contents. Kunyu tushuo was utilized as a reference to the debate on natural philosophy. Kunyu waiji was used actively by scholars interested in natural science. Finally, the readers of Kunyu waiji and Kunyu tushuo were mainly intellectuals living in and around Seoul. This was compared to the situation of the Zhifang waiji readers, who comprised both residents of Seoul and intellectuals who lived in the countryside.
