Abstract
Starting in the Ancient times, humans have used animals as a personified formto express their thoughts and ways of ideal life. Therefore, the archeological artifactsdiscovered in an area show the ways of life of the people in the past through artifactsthat are shaped like animals, story of animals and by whatever actions the peoplein the area took in relation with the animals. The bronze belt loops in the shape of a tiger found in the archeological sightof Shin-dae-Li at Gyeungsan, Gyeungsangbukdo is a great example to go back intime and to see the ways of life of ancient Gyeungsan citizens. This artifact is agreat piece to learn about the past in addition to the folklore that is based on tigers. The Bronze tiger belt loops are usually found in the South-Eastern area of theKorean Peninsula such as Gyeungsan, Gyeungju, Youngcheon, and so forth. Thetwo bronze tiger belt loops found at Shin-dae-li archeological sight inside woodedcoffins of tribal chief-leveled persons that lived during the Proto-Three Kingdomperiod of Korea show that these belt loops symbolize the Korean take on foreigncultures, and also signify the noble status of these men. These artifacts show thepower of Apdukgook, one of the Proto-Three Kingdom period in the Koreanpeninsula. After Chosun dynasty, the people of Gyeungsan were afraid of tigers buttreated them as sacred animals. The tigers were regarded as a symbol of protection. These theories can be supported by the folklore in the area. These tales show thesymbolic meanings of tigers have changed over time in the Gyeungsan area over the years and by change of cultural ideals.
