Abstract
This study analyzes the current status of North Korean defector ministry in Korean churches after the COVID-19 pandemic and proposes future directions. The history of defector ministry traces back to the faith formation period in China during the 1990s, followed by significant settlement and church establishment in the 2000s, evolving into various forms such as departmental ministry, defector-centered churches, and North-South integrated ministry. This research examines the adaptation process of defectors to South Korean society and explores the missionary nature of this ministry, utilizing John Berry’s acculturation theory and the missional church theory as frameworks. Surveys were conducted with 70 defector members, 105 South Korean members, and 27 defector pastors, alongside in-depth interviews to assess the ministry’s status during the COVID-19 period. Negative impacts included difficulties with online worship, a decrease in attendance, and economic challenges. However, positive changes post-pandemic included qualitative growth in faith, strengthened community belonging, and the adoption of new digital ministry methods. Notably, 40-50-year-olds comprised 67% of defector members, reflecting a demographic where women outnumbered men by more than three times, and the Greater Seoul area accounted for 70% of their residence, highlighting the region’s critical role in defector ministry. This study suggests that defector ministry should transition to a relationship-centered hybrid model, integrating online and offline approaches, with specialized role divisions by ministry type to enhance efficiency. Given the sharp decline in defector influx post-COVID (236 in 2024, 38 by March 2025), Korean churches need to focus on North-South integration and missionary commitment to establish a sustainable defector ministry model.
