Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the history and types of North Korean migrant ministries within Korean churches and to propose the tasks and directions for the future development of a “North Korean Migrant Ministry 2.0.” To achieve this, the study first reviews the background of North Korean migrants’ escapes and their circumstances in South Korea. It then categorizes North Korean migrant ministries into two main types: ministries for migrants abroad and ministries for migrants in South Korea. Based on this analysis, the study identifies key issues and challenges related to North Korean migrant ministry. Specifically, this study designates the North Korean migrant ministry that has been actively conducted by Korean churches since 1995—spanning an entire generation—as “North Korean Migrant Ministry 1.0.” Building upon this foundation, it proposes the tasks and objectives of “North Korean Migrant Ministry 2.0.” First, the focus of North Korean Migrant Ministry 2.0 should shift from newly arriving migrants to those who have already settled in South Korea. Second, the leadership in North Korean migrant ministry should increasingly be taken by North Korean migrant churches and Christians themselves. Third, efforts should be made to encourage the reconstruction of the unique identity of North Korean migrants. Fourth, there should be a process in which migrants themselves rediscover their identity and theology within the framework of faith. Lastly, in the era of North Korean Migrant Ministry 2.0, Korean churches must engage in a journey of transformation together with North Korean migrant churches, experiencing change within the Gospel.
