Abstract
This study aims to determine whether there were changes in university students’ collaboration skills, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and global citizenship before and after class when applying a living lab to the course ‘North Korea regional studies.’ For this purpose, a one-term living lab course was conducted with students from A University, with a pre-test before the course and a post-test after the living lab activities. Data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0, employing frequency analysis and paired-sample t-tests. The results showed: first, there was a statistically significant difference in university students’ collaboration skills after the living lab activities. Second, there were statistically significant differences in problem-solving abilities and creativity after the living lab activities. Third, the mean level of global citizenship before and after the living labs increased in the post-survey, but this change was not statistically significant. These findings indicate that participation in the living-labs influenced learners’ collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity capacities. Based on these results, the study suggests that researchers should examine whether other variables also change when applying living labs to the ‘North Korea regional studies,’ and explore which factors have the greatest impact when applying living labs to similar courses. It also proposes the need to develop measurement tools related to living-lab classes addressing settlement issues of North Korean defectors. The results of this study demonstrate that living lab classes can enhance not only individual competencies of university students but also group-level capabilities. Furthermore, the findings suggest that to ensure sustainable living lab courses, elaborated design improvements should be considered when applying living labs to courses with specific contexts, such as ‘North Korea regional studies.’
