수많은 그리스도인들이 목숨을 바쳐서 기독교 신앙을 지켜왔던 순교의 희생 위에 오늘날의 교회는 서 있다. 본고는 목숨까지 버리는 극단적인 상황에서도 기독교 복음의 진실성과 진리됨을 증거하려고 했던 순교를 신학적으로, 윤리적으로 고찰해보고자 했다. 극단적인 억압과 반대를 받고 있는 상황을 기독교 신앙은 어떻게 대처해야 하는가? 인간의 영웅적인 자기희생과 구분될 수 있는 순교의 기독교적 정체성은 무엇인가? 순교가 죽음과 같은 한계상황에서만이 아니라, 그리스도인의 일상적 삶에 대해서도 의미를 가지는가? 이런 물음에 대답하고자, 본고는 먼저 기독교 역사에서 순교를 살펴보고, 이어서 순교의 신학적 의의와 윤리적 함의를 살펴보았다. 순교란 기독교 신앙으로 인해서 박해를 받지만, 고난을 감수하고 심지어 죽음을 감수하면서도 기독교 신앙의 진리를 증거하는 것을 말한다. 기독교 복음의 진리에 대한 확신과 증거는 종교적 박해의 상황에서는 순교적 죽음으로 나타났고, 박해가 없는 상황에서는 순교적 삶 내지 자기부정에 초점을 맞춘 수도원의 금욕주의로도 나타났다. 또한 기독교 복음의 진리가 정치, 사회적 맥락에서 부정되고 있다고 여겨질 때에는 순교의 외연이 기독교 사회윤리적으로 확대되기도 했다. 다양한 형태의 순교에서 공통적으로 확인되는 중요한 순교의 요인은 그리스도에 대한 신앙의 증거와 고난의 감수이다. 그리스도에 대한 믿음에 필연적으로 수반되는 그리스도에 대한 뒤따름이 초래하는 자기부정과 고난의 감수는 모든 그리스도인에게 불가피하다. 그렇다면 어떤 형태의 순교든 간에 - 순교적 죽음, 순교적 삶, 교리적 신앙고백의 순교, 기독교윤리적 신앙고백의 순교든 - 순교로부터 원칙적으로 제외되는 그리스도인은 없다. 물론 그 어떤 형태의 순교적 증언과 실천이든 간에 기독교 신앙을 증언하는 방식에는 폭력과 강제성이 포기되어야 한다. 원수사랑과 종말론적 승리에 대한 희망에 근거하여 기독교 신앙은 비폭력을 필수불가결한 증언의 방식으로 채택해야 할 것을 순교의 정신은 호소하고 있다. 그렇지만 증언해야 할 진리의 문제에 순교가 관여되어 있기에, 순교에서 뚜렷한 지향성과 능동성은 포기될 수 없다. 순교의 목적은 고난의 수동적 감수 자체가 아니라, 기독교 신앙의 진리에 대한 증언이기 때문이다.
Abstract
The Christian Church of today stands upon the sacrifice of martyrdom of countless Christians for its faith. This paper tries to give theological, ethical considerations on the martyrdom which testifies to the truth of the gospel in the extreme situation of death. How should Christians cope with the extreme oppression and opposition to the Christian faith? What is the Christian identity of martyrdom that is distinct from human heroic self-sacrifice? Does martyrdom have a significant meaning not only for a critical situation of death, but also for the day-to-day life of a Christian? To answer these questions, this paper will first observe martyrdom in the history of Christianity, and then consider the theological significance and the ethical implications of martyrdom. Martyrdom means to bear witness to the truth of the Christian faith, to be willing to suffer, even risking death. This confident testimony for the truth of the Christian gospel appeared as death by martyrdom in the situation of religious persecution, as the martyr’s life had focused on self-denial or as ascetics of the monastery in situations where there is no persecution. And in the case that the truth of the Christian gospel is denied in the social, political context, the extension of martyrdom has been enlarged to the dimension of Christian social ethics. Factors identified as common in various forms of martyrdom are the testimony to belief in Christ and suffering. Self-denial and suffering which accompany Christian discipleship to Christ in belief in Jesus Christ are inevitable for all Christians. From the principle of martyrdom, the various forms of martyrdom - martyrdom death or martyrdom life, doctrinal martyrdom or ethical martyrdom – exclude no Christian. Of course, all forms of martyrdom should abandon the way of violence and compulsion. The spirit of martyrdom appeals to the nonviolent method of the Christian testimony and practice, based on the command to love one’s enemy and the hope for eschatological victory. But martyrdom cannot give up its distinct orientation and activeness. This is because the purpose of martyrdom is not passive suffering in itself, but rather the testimony for the truth of the Christian faith.
