오늘날 전 세계에서 일어나고 있는 가장 중요한 인구변동은 바로 출산율의 급격한 감소다. 2013년을 기준으로 볼 때, 한국은 합계출산율(TFT)이 1.19로서 예외적으로 낮은출산율을 보여주고 있는 바, 이것이야말로 한국이 당면한 가장 심각한 사회문제라고볼 수 있을 것이다. 이에 더하여, 노령층의 빈곤율이 높고, 다양한 가족 문제가 빈발하고또한 사회적 고립이 나타나는 등 고령화는 1960년대 이래 “압축적 근대화”를 이룬 것으로 널리 알려진 한국이 당면한 또 다른 중대한 사회문제다. 한편, 세계 기독교 근대사에서 한국 개신교가 전례가 없는 괄목할만한 성장을 이룬 뒤에, 최근 한국 개신교회는논란의 중심에 서게 되었고, 그 결과 지난 20년간 로마 가톨릭교회는 신자가 꾸준히늘어난 것과 대조적으로 개신교의 신자 숫자는 계속 떨어지고 있다. 필자는 “선교적교회”의 관점 속에서 급속도의 성장 뒤에 오늘의 한국 개신교가 직면한 가장 중요한 도전은 바로 (존 스토트의 말로서) “깊이 없는 성장”의 문제를 어떻게 교정하는 가에 있다고 본다. 급격하게 변동하는 글로벌 사회 속에서 여성과 가족의 쟁점이 중요함에도 불구하고, 한국 개신교는 전체적으로 지금까지 고령화, 죽음, 종교성 사이의 상호 관련은물론 출산율과 종교성 사이의 관계에 대해서도 선구적으로 관심을 보이지 않았다.
Abstract
The single most important demographic change in the world right now is the dramatic decline in birth rates. In South Korea, the extraordinary low birth rate as of 2013 (Total Fertility Rate: 1.19) would be the most serious social problem. In addition to this, an aging population with a high level of the elderly poor, various family problems and social isolation are other grave social issues in the country that is renowned for its “compressed modernization” since the 1960s. In the meantime, after a period of unprecedentedly remarkable growth of Protestantism in the modern history of world Christianity, Korean Protestant Church is recently struggling with controversy and a decline in its followers while the Roman Catholic Church has continuously gained its believers in the last 20 years. From the perspective of the “missional church,” I would argue that the most vital challenge of Korean Protestant Christianity after its rapid growth is to rectify the problematic “growth without depth” (in John Stott's words). Despite the rising issue of women and family in the rapidly changing global society, Korean Protestantism in general has been neglecting to address the relationship between birth rate and religiosity as well as that between aging, death, and religiosity. Consequently, it has not tried to seek substantial alternatives or correctives for low birth rate and aging, the two intertwined social problems within the contemporary Korean society. In this paper, I propose some viable innovative choices for the mid-sized or large Korean churches to manage the momentous issues of low birthrate and aging: (1) to provide communal child-care and mutual rearing system through utilizing church facilities and human capital (2) to establish church group (male/female) homes (within or nearby the church venue) for the elderly single members of the congregation.
