Abstract
More people today have plastic surgery to avoid being bullied or to get more privileges in social competitions and human relationships than previous generations. This trend often brings about irrecoverable side effects and social maladies, such as morbid addiction for cosmetic surgery, appearance bias, loss of self-esteem and suicide caused by appearance-based discrimination. In order to reconsider this image obsessed culture and lookism from a Christian perspective, this paper attempts to explore the earliest Christian author’s stance on human appearance and transformation (metamorphosis) reflected in Rom 12:2, Phil 3:21, 1 Cor 15:44, 51-52, and 2 Cor 3:18. The paper discusses what religious, mythical and philosophical environment Paul inherited from his Greco-Roman and Jewish predecessors and how Paul innovatively conflates the environment with Jesus traditions to produce his peculiar concept of transformation. The primary methodology is the history of ideas suggested by Arthur Lovejoy, but the paper also consults previous studies carried out from different perspectives. Paul employs many terms and ideas of his Greco-Roman and Jewish predecessors and he deconstructs and reconstructs them in order to generate new Christian meanings for the resurrected body of Christ in which each individual, whether strong or weak, whether ugly or good-looking, has its own born function. Paul particularly encourage the people born weak in appearance that they are actually “indispensable” in the body (1 Cor 12:22). He accepted the reality that the outer human being is deteriorating by time but he still keeps delighted by the hope that “the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies” (2 Cor 4:10-16). This study is innovative because it stresses Paul’s perspective on the outer human being and physical aspect of transformation which previous studies did not discuss enough. Since Paul was the first Christian author who developed the theory of transformation, this study will be helpful to understand similar topics in the other early Christian works.
