Abstract

YHWH’s command destroying Baal altar that the Canaanites made is found in a very different context in the story of Gideon(Judg 6:25-32). Here the command aims at the Baal altar that the Israelites built up. This study has reviewed the passage of Judges 6:25-32, which is the beginning of the whole Gideon story and showed how pervasive the Baal worship in the society of Israel at the time of Judges was. First, the intensity of the Baal worship in Ophrah even prohibited Gideon from destroying his father’s Baal altar in the day time. He had to destroy it at night when nobody could see what Gideon did. Second, Gideon did it with his 10 servants. It means that the scale of the Baal altar was incomprehensible. Third, the father of Gideon owned his altar for Baal. This certainly indicates that the house of Gideon worshipped Baal at the time. The author of the Book of Judges wanted to emphasize that Israel’s Baal worship was pervasive and very influential. The evildoing that Israel did in the sight of YHWH was nothing but the worship of Baal, the other god. This is the sinful act of Israel and YHWH became angry about it. That is why he sent the messenger of YHWH in 6:7-10 and criticized Israel’s fear of the god of the land of the Amorites, that is, Baal himself. By destroying Baal’s altar, the story of Gideon shows that as long as Gideon lived Israel worshipped YHWH. However, before Gideon’s days Israel in general worshipped Baal by building his altar and Asherah beside it. The author of the Book of Judges highlights the apostasy that Israel committed by worshipping Baal in the story of Gideon. The real problem of Israel was not the relationship between Israel and the Canaanite people(Midian in the case of Gideon), but the relationship between Israel and YHWH. The right way of worshipping YHWH is to worship YHWH alone.
