지리적 개념, 역사 해석, 기독교에 대한 자세 등과 관련된 동남아 이해의 외부적 관찰과 내부적 관찰은 한편으로는 식민주의와 민족주의의 배경에 그 바탕을 두고 있으며, 다른 한편으로는 다수민족과 소수민족 간 상이한 입장을 보여준다. 외부적 관찰과 내부적 관찰의 이러한 특징을 염두에 둘 때, 한국인으로서 동남아의 이해를 과연 어떤 방식으로 해야 할 것인가? 분명한 점은 외부적 관찰의 오리엔탈리즘에 빠져서도 안 되겠지만, 내부적 관찰의 자종족중심적이자 다수민족 중심적인 시각을 답습할 필요도 없다는 것이다. 그러나 경우에 따라서는 외부적 관찰 혹은 내부적 관찰이 필요할 때도 있다. 한 국가의 역사 형성에 기여한 외래적 및 이질적 요소에 대한 평가와 비교사적 이해의 경우, 외부적 관찰이 더욱 공정한 시각을 제공할 것이다. 하지만 불교나 이슬람처럼 하나의 제도종교가 국가적 정체성과 문화의 구심점으로서 한 국민국가 형성의 과정에서 결정적인 기능을 발휘하는 것을 이해하려고 할 때에는 내부적 관찰이 동원돼야 할 것이다.
Abstract
The external view and internal view of the understanding Southeast Asia in relation to some geographical concepts, historical analysis and attitude toward the Christianity in Southeast Asia are, on the one hand, based upon the colonial and nationalist backgrounds, and show, on the other hand, different stands between the majority and minority peoples. Taking such characteristics of the external view and internal view into consideration, how should the Koreans, then, understand Southeast Asia? It is clear that they should not only get out of the Orientalism of the external view, but need not follow in the footstep of the ethnocentric and majority-centered internal view too. There are, however, some circumstances where the external view or the internal view is needed. In the case of the understanding comparative histories and evaluating exogenous and heterogenous elements which have contributed to the making of the history of a nation, the external view could provide a more impartial observation. On the contrary, the internal viewpoint should be taken to understand the decisive functions of the institutional religion such as the Buddhism or the Islam as the centripetal force of the national culture and identity in the construction of a nation-state.
