이 논문은 폭력과 전쟁을 반대하는 존 요더의 평화주의를 옹호한다. 요더의 평화주의를 기독론과 종말론, 교회론이라는 신학적 틀 안에서 해명하는 것에 주안점을 두었던 기존의 논의와 달리 폭력과 전쟁을 반대하는 평화주의의 논리 자체를 설명하고자 했다. 그에게 전쟁은 신학에 있어서 부수적이거나 부록에 그치지 않는다. 신학 전체를 결정하는 모퉁이돌과도 같다. 먼저, 이 논문은 평화주의의 개념을 정의하고, 요더의 평화주의의 특징을 설명하겠다. 그리고 정당한 전쟁론과 라인홀드 니버, 칼 바르트와의 대화와 대결을 통해 그의 평화주의의 독특성을 논구하려 한다. 이 글을 통해 평화주의가 한국교회를 교회되게 하는 방향과 목표를 보여주고, 전쟁을 경험하고 분단의 현실을 살아가는 우리에게 평화와 통일을 향해 나아가도록 기여하길 소망한다.
Abstract
In this essay, I will defend John Yoder's pacifism that is against violence and war. Unlike the previous discussions which have primarily laid their focus on explaining Yoder's pacifism within the theological frames such as Christology, eschatology, and ecclesiology, in this article I will lay my focus on explaining his logic of pacifism itself against violence and war. In Yoder’s theology, his position on war is neither subordinate nor an appendix. It is the cornerstone that determines his entire theology. First, I will define pacificism in its general concept, and then explain the characteristics of Yoder's pacifism. Afterwards, I will discuss the uniqueness of his pacifism by exploring just war theories, his conversations and confrontations with Reinhold Niebuhr and Karl Barth. I believe pacifism will be the way and goal that make Korean church a church it ought to be, and contribute to Korean society that has experienced divisions and war but wants to run for peace and reunification.
