성품의 함양에 관한 덕 윤리의 통찰 - 하우어워스를 중심으로

그리스도인을 향한 따가운 시선이 넘쳐나는 때, 그리스도인은 무엇에 관심해야 하는가? 교회답지 못하고 그리스도인답지 못한 부분을 자성하고 도덕적 정체성을 회복하는 노력이 절실하다. 다시 말해, 그리스도인다움을 추구해야 한다. 이 문제를 풀어내기 위하여, 이 글은 하우어워스의 기독교 덕 윤리가 추구하는 성품의 함양에 관심한다. 이와 관련하여, 하우어워스의 덕 윤리가 아리스토텔레스를 추종한 탓에 프로테스탄트와 어울리지 않는다는 비판적 의견부터 검토할 필요가 있다. 하우어워스가 매킨타이어를 수용하여 아리스토텔레스에 관심한 것은 사실이지만, 성품에 대한 관심, 내러티브와 공동체의 중요성에 대한 인식은 기독교 덕 윤리를 위한 중요한 도구가 된다. 하우어워스의 덕 윤리는 예수 내러티브에 기초한 것으로서, 그리스도인다운 성품의 함양을 강조한다. 그리스도인다움이란 예수 내러티브에 대한 신실함이다. 이것을 그리스도인다운 그리스도인됨이라고 할 수 있다. 그리스도인다움은 개인의 성품에 그치지 않는다. 예수 내러티브 공동체인 교회에 대한 관심으로 이어진다. 하우어워스에 따르면, 교회는 예수 내러티브에 충실한 그리스도인이 될 수 있도록 성품을 함양시켜야 할 책무를 지닌다. 나아가, 기독교 덕 윤리에는 두 가지 과제가 있다. 그 하나는 복음의 사회적 증인으로서, 복음에 대한 바른 인식을 회복하고 번영의 복음을 극복하는 것이다. 다른 하나는 성품의 함양에 대한 논의를 신성한 성품으로서의 영성함양에 대한 관심으로 확장시켜야 한다. 특히, 공감과 환대의 사회적 영성을 성품화해야 한다. 이러한 노력은 소종파적 퇴거를 극복하는 통로일 뿐만 아니라, 한국교회의 윤리개혁을 위한 자원이 될 것으로 기대된다.
Abstract
In times of disrespecting for Christianity, what should Christians be interested? The most urgent task of Christians is self-reflection on moral failure of Chrstians and efforts for restoring of Christian moral identity. In other words, Christians have to pursue being Christian as Christian. To treat this topic, this article is interested in the cultivation of the character pursued by Hauerwas’s Christian virtue ethics. In this regard, it is necessary to examine the critical opinion that Hauerwas’s virtue ethics does not go with Protestant theology because of following Aristotle. It is true that Hauerwas embraced McIntyre and interested in Aristotle, but interest in character, attention for narrative and awareness of the value of community are important tools for Christian virtue ethics. Hauerwas’s virtue ethics is based on Jesus narratives, emphasizing the cultivation of Christian character. Being Christian means the faithfulness of Jesus narratives. This can be said to be Christian as Christian. It leads to interest in church as the community of Jesus narrative. According to Hauerwas, church has responsibility to cultivate character to be a Christian faithful to the Jesus narrative. Furthermore, there are two tasks as follows: (1)restoring the proper understanding of the Gospel and overcome the gospel of prosperity. (2)extending the horizon of discussion from cultivation of character to interest of social spirituality as sacred character. In particular, social spirituality of empathy and hospitality should be cultivated. These efforts are expected not only to overcome the so-called sectarian withdrwal, but also to serve as a resource for ethical reform of Korean church.
