Abstract
The article aims to deepen and widen the discussion of the evolution and telos which is a main part of the 2009 Gifford Lecture of Alister McGrath. While posing the question of whether Darwinian theory of evolution offers an appropriate big picture of the future trend of the world, and comparing positions emphasizing contingency and purpose regarding the trend of evolution, McGrath unfolds the telelogical argument of evolution. It is worth noting two difficulties in the recent debate about evolution and telos. On the one hand, there is confusion and aporia regarding the trend of evolution among Darwinian evolutionists; on the other hand, The Darwinian theory of evolution is extremely limited in explaining the emergence of highly complex consciousness or a spiritual being. The author argues that it is compatible to respect the Darwinian theory of evolution as a verificable scientific explanation of the phenomenon and fact of the natural world and, at the same time, to pursue an alternative ontological narrative reflecting on the telos and meaning of the world.
