이 연구는 1884년부터 1910년까지 내한한 장로교 선교사들의 집단체적 성격에 대한 분석이다. 1910년을 기준으로 잡은 것은 그 해에 있었던 한일합병으로 인해 ‘구한말’이라고 하는 시대 구분선을 적용할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 장로교 선교사들을 하나의 범주로 설정한 것은, 그들이 같은 교파 전통을 가지고, 하나의 조직체를 구성하여 한국선교에 나섰다는 점에서 하나의 통일성 있는 선교활동체(宣敎活動體)로 이해하는 것이 가능하기 때문이다. 그들은 당시 서구문화의 산물로서 그 시대정신을 체화하고 있었으며, 본국과 파송교회의 종교문화를 자신 안에 내장하고 온 사람들이었다. 그러므로 이 글은 선교와 관련한 당대의 시대정신을 구성했던 문화인류학적 조류, 제국주의적 사고와 오리엔탈리즘, 경계집합적 범주관 등에 대한 검토로부터 시작한다. 이어서 초기 내한 장로교 선교활동체의 내적 동일성과 그들을 파송한 교회의 역사와 신학에 대한 분석을 통해 그 성격의 한 면을 가늠해 본다. 마지막으로는 이 초기 내한장로교 선교활동체가 한국에서 수행한 선교의 양상에 대한 분석을 통해 이들의 성격을 파악해 본다. 한국교회의 중요한 성격 형성 요인들을 충분히 규명하기 위해서는, 향후 한국 사회의 종교문화적 특성, 현대사 경험, 한국교회의 신학과 선교경험 등이한국교회의 성격 형성에 미친 영향에 대한 분석이 추가로 이루어져야 할 것이다.
Abstract
This study focuses on the characteristics of the early Presbyterian mission body in Korea which consisted of missionaries that came to Korea between 1844 and 1910. 1910 is the dividing line between Chosen Dynasty era and Japanese Colonial era. The early Presbyterian missionaries to Korea had shared the same reformation tradition, and built one mission body together in Korea although they were from four different churches in three countries. They were people of their times, which means they could not be free the current of the times and conveyed the religious culture of their sending churches. Therefore this essay begins with an investigation of anthropology, imperialistic thought and orientalism, and the world-view based on the “well-formed sets” (with sharp boundaries) as the thought-methods of those missionaries. In the second part, we will see the sameness of the early Presbyterian missionary group, the history of their sending churches and its theology to understand their features. Finally, we will analyze their mission practices in Korea to examine their distinctive. Additional efforts are necessary to complete the study on the characteristics of Korean church of which this essay holds a part: for example the features of Korean religion and culture, the historical experiences of the church, and its theology and mission engagement etc.
