본 연구는 2016년 미국 대선에서의 복음주의자들의 도널드 트럼프 지지에 대한 종교사회학적 탐구를 목적으로 한다. 후보의 신앙과 도덕성을 가장 중요하게 여기던 복음주의자들이 신앙은 물론 도덕성에서도 취약한 트럼프를 지지한 것은 독특한 현상이 아닐 수 없다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 복음주의자들과 트럼프 간 동맹의 사회정치적 맥락을 추적하고 그것의 사회학적 의미에 대한 해석을 시도한다. 이를 위해 첫째, 백인 복음주의자들의 지지를 이끌어낸 동기적 상황에 대한 추적의 일환으로 트럼프 지지의 다양한 요인에 대한 사회과학적 논의를 전개한다. 둘째, 복음주의와 트럼프를 결정적으로 이어준 미국 기독교 국가주의에 대한 상징적 차원과 전략적 차원의 논의를 전개한다. 셋째, 복음주의의 도덕적 당위와 트럼프와의 동맹관계라는 정치적 현실 간의 모순을 종교지도자들이 결의론을 통해 어떻게 해결하는가를 살펴본다. 연구 결과로 첫째, 백인 노동자들의 경제적 박탈감, 성적우월감 상실, 인종적 우월주의 쇠퇴, 외국인 혐오, 이슬람에 대한 공포 등에 대한 트럼프의 분노 자극이 수용되었으며, 둘째, 미국 기독교 국가주의를 트럼프가 ‘미국 우선주의’로 수용하면서 그에 대한 지지가 확산되었음을 알 수 있었다. 끝으로 복음주의자들은 트럼프의 도덕성 문제에도 불구하고 종교의 자유와 문화전쟁에서의 승리를 위해 그를 택할 수밖에 없다는 결의론을 전개함을 알 수 있었다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the support of evangelicals to Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential Election of America. Especially, it is a unique phenomenon that many evangelicals who are very much faith-and-morality oriented had voted for Trump in spite of his lack of faith and morality. Thus, this study traces the socio-political context of the coalition of evangelicals and Trump. First, as a way of tracing the motivational situations under which Trump scored a success of drawing the support of evangelicals, I analyzed the social scientific discussions about the various factors for the support of the evangelicals for Trump. Second, I discussed the symbolic and strategic dimensions of American Christian nationalism which has decisively put together Trump and evangelicals. Third, I looked into the casuistry with which evangelical leaders tried to solve the moral contradiction resulted from the coalition with Trump. The research results are as follows: First, Trump’s incitement of anger against the economic anxiety, misogyny, decline of racial supremacy against blacks, xenophobia, and Islamophobia were well accepted by the white working class evangelicals. Second, along with the acceptance of American Christian nationalism by Trump with his ‘America First’ slogan, the support to Trump could be proliferated. Finally, the evangelicals developed their own casuistry justifying their support of Trump, in spite of his lack of morality, for the victory at the cultural war against the progressives.
