Abstract
The Sermon on the Mount(henceforth SM) has attracted scholarly attention from various perspectives, with the quintessential nature of Jesus’ theological ethic. In fact, the ethical instruction of the SM is directly related to Jesus’ theological concern for who God is and what is the prerequisite qualification of entering the Kingdom of Heaven. Such ethical codes, somewhat radical, could be made possible only by way of Jesus’ subversive reinterpretation of the Torah, rather than being shackled with its literal, superficial meanings. As an epitomized manual for discipleship, several features are detected from the SM. First, the SM based its ethical principle on the reciprocity of mutual benefit with the priority of self-reflection. Second, its ethical feature is characterized by the straightforward practice of what one has learned and become enlightened. Third, the theological ethic of the SM encourages one to overcome all the barriers and boundaries which serve for one’s own exclusive interest, even the boundary of good and evil, in the name of God’s universal love. However, getting into the details of dynamic human life, the SM displays diverse chasms into what is nowadays called ‘situation ethic.’ Nevertheless, God’s consistent faithfulness in the eschatological judgment warrants fruition-centered ethic in confrontation with all variable situations.
