Abstract
This article examines and compares the approaches of Pseudo-Dionysius, who is well-known for his distinctive method via negativa, and John Calvin, the father of the Reformed tradition whose famous slogan is sola scriptura, to the issue of knowledge of God. In Corpus Dionysiacum Dionysius argues that we can know God through unknowing, in a union with the unknown God, and suggests two paths to that union: through the celestial and ecclesiastical hierarchies and through perpetual saying and unsaying of the divine names. In his Institutes of the Christian Religion Calvin claims that we can know God through scripture and also—only insofar as our vision is corrected by scripture—through God’s created works. The main differences in their approaches are their understanding of “unknown” or “hidden” God and their ways of using scripture. While for Dionysius the unknown God is our goal, an union with whom we pursue, for Calvin, an unknown god is not only the consequence of the lack of true knowledge of God but the hiddenness of God is also a kind of a restricted area. Also, for Dionysius scripture is a means that points beyond itself to the unknown God, whereas, for Calvin, scripture is the safety zone within which a pious Christian must remain.
