Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the components of Physical Literacy (PL) in middle school students and to develop an instrument to measure PL. The constructs were built based on input from 10 specialists who possess a decade of teaching expertise. Through exploratory factor analysis of 45 items specifically asking about the factors selected by the experts, 35 items were adopted except for 10 items with too low scores, and 26 items were adopted except for 19 items from 45 items for female students. Then, to reveal the validity of the measurement tool, we found the components of PL through exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to verify the structure by finding common components among the various components in the data. After securing external validity, seven factors were identified from 35 items for boys: habits and passions, positive thinking, self-esteem, motivation, knowledge, education, and physical ability, and 26 items for girls: physical ability, knowledge, education, motivation, self-esteem, positive thinking, and activity habits. This reveals boys and girls have cognitive, emotional, and physical traits. The PL scale established is a tool for evaluating the PL levels of middle school children. It has both theoretical and practical implications for promoting an active lifestyle during adolescence and establishing a strong basis for lifetime physical education
