사회경제적 관점으로 읽는 전도서의 소박한 행복과 ‘탈성장’

이 논문은 전도서에서 말하는 온갖 ‘수고’와 ‘이득’의 문제를 사회경제비평의 관점에서 읽기를 시도한 것이며, 전도서의 소박한 삶의 기쁨을 현대의 ‘탈성장’ 이론과 함께 대안적인 지혜로 제안한다. “해 아래 사람이 수고하는 온갖 수고가 그에게 무슨 이득이 있는가?”(1:3) 이 질문은 전도서의 핵심 주제질문으로서 “모든 것이 헛되다”(1:2)라는 현실 판단 만큼 도전적이다. 코헬렛은 비슷한 질문을 반복하면서(3:9; 5:16) 태양의 열기 아래 노동하며 살아가는 인류(아담)의 정체성은 물론 인류의 사회경제적 존재로서의 현실을 자각시킨다. 따라서 이 논의는 경제성장을 과도하게 부추기고 이것을 종교화하는 삶을 각성시키기 위함이며, 온갖 수고에서 벗어날 수 없는 인류가 어떻게 살 것인가에 대한 지혜 담론이다. 코헬렛은 솔로몬의 영광을 헛것으로 만들고, 온갖 수고를 증오한다고 말할 뿐 아니라(2:17-18), 모든 것은 헛되고 바람 잡는 것이라고 일곱 번 반복한다(1:14; 2:11; 2:17; 2:26; 4:4; 4:16; 6:9). 그러나 동시에 그는 ‘먹고 마시고 일하며 기뻐하라’는 단순하고 경쾌한 조언을 변주된 문장으로 일곱 번 반복한다(2:24-26; 3:12-13, 21-22; 5:18-20[17-19]; 8:15; 9:7-10; 11:7-10). 이처럼 단순한 일상의 반복에서 삶의 기쁨을 찾는 코헬렛의 행복론은 성장을 추구하는 경제 시스템에서 이탈하고 성장을 지양하는 ‘탈성장’ 이론과 호응한다. 궁극적으로 이 논의는 경제성장에만 집착하는 과도한 욕망을 꼬집고 풍요와 부족 사이에서 적절한 수준과 절제의 삶을 위해 더 많은 소유와 성장이 아니라 ‘소박한 풍요’를 위한 지혜 정신 확장을 목표한다.
Abstract
This thesis proposes the joy of a simple life and the ‘degrowth’ movement as an alternative wisdom from the perspective of socioeconomic criticism of all the ‘labor’(amal, ) and ‘profit’(itron, ) of mankind in Ecclesiastes. “What profit does man gain from all his toil under the sun?”(1:3) This question, as the central thematic one of the book of Qoheleth, is as challenging as the judgment of reality that “All is vanity.”(1:2) Qoheleth repeats similar questions(3:9; 5:16[15]), imprinting the identity of humankind, who cannot escape from all kinds of hardships. And also it makes us aware of the identity of mankind(adam, ) as well as the reality of socioeconomic existence. Accordingly, this discussion is a discourse that deals with how mankind will live through all kinds of hard work, awakening the act of over-encouraging economic growth and turning it into a religion. In fact, Qoheleth not only makes Solomon's glory vain and hates all toil(2:17-18), but also repeats seven times that everything is vanity and chasing after the wind(1:14; 2:11; 2:17; 2:26; 4:4). At the same time, however, he repeats seven variations of the simple and cheerful advice, ‘Eat, drink, and enjoy in labor’(2:24-26; 3:12-13, 21-22; 5:18-20[17-19]; 8:15; 9:7-10; 11:7-10). Interestingly, Qoheleth's discourse of happiness, which seeks joy in the repetitive simplicity of daily life, corresponds to 'degrowth', which is 'appropriate growth' that avoids growth and breaks away from the economic system that pursues unlimited growth. Therefore, this discussion pinches the greed that is obsessed with economic growth between abundance and shortage and also presents Qoheleth's wisdom and degrowth that encourages appropriate levels and abstinence as an alternative wisdom for ‘frugal abundance’. Both are spirit of wisdom that aim for a better relationship rather than possession, and maturity, not growth, for a better today.
