본 논문은 교회의 본질에 대한 루터의 통일적인 이해를 연구한다. 기존의 루터 학자들은 루터의 교회론을 하나의 특정한 주제와 결부시켜 이해했다. 물론 루터의 교회론은 성찬론과 이신칭의 교리와 거룩함과 하나님의 말씀과 결코 무관하지 않다. 그러나 이러한 것들 중에 하나와 교회의 본질을 결부시켜 이해하면, 오히려 교회의 본질에 대한 루터 자신의 포괄적인 이해가 희석된다. 이러한 난점을 극복하는 방법은 종합적인 이해를 시도하는 것이다. 그래서 본 논문은 루터의 교회론을 하나님의 뜻과 예정, 신앙, 성령, 성도, 그리스도, 복음에 대한 루터의 이해와 연관시켜 논구한다. 본 논문이 교회의 본질에 대한 루터의 생각을 포괄적인 방식으로 연구하는 이유는 루터 자신이 교회의 본질을 이러한 여러 주제들과 결부시켜 논구하고 있기에, “새로운 피조물 전체”(tota nova creatura), “하나님의 백성”(polulus Dei), “의인들의 연합”(communio iustae), “신자들의 연합”(communio fideles), “성도들의 연합”(communio sanctorum), “택자들의 연합”(communio electi)이라는 루터 자신의 다양한 표현들에 근거하여 루터가 생각하는 교회는 오직 하나님께 속한 백성이며, 하나님을 믿지 않는 자들은 참여할수 없는 신자들의 연합이며, 거룩하지 않은 자들은 참여할 수 없는 성도들의 연합이며, 하나님의 기뻐하신 뜻 이외에 인간의 노력이나 공로를 비롯한 이 땅에서의 다른 어떠한 것에도 기초하지 않은 택자들의 연합이며, 이 땅에서 거듭나지 않은 어떠한 자도 참여할 수 없는 완전히 새로운 피조물을 의미하는 것이라고 주장한다.
Abstract
This paper is intended to examine Luther’s integrative understanding on the nature of the Church in interrelation to other common doctrines. The previous scholarship on this issue tends to, focusing one specific aspect of Luther’s ecclesiology, present the partial observation of his view on the nature of the church, particularly in reference to either of sacraments, justification and God’s Word. But this approach could, and indeed did, cause the full picture of Luther’s ecclesiology to be distorted, or maybe unconsciously neglected. A solution to overcome the weakness of each of those sacramental, justificational, and Christological approaches is the integrative approach in which the paper deals with Luther’s integrative view on the nature of the church in doctrinal connection with Christ, faith, Holy Spirit, and Predestination. Upon this approach, the paper demonstrates that the church, to Luther’s eye, is tota nova creatura, polulus Dei, communio iustae, communio fideles, communio sanctorum, and communio electi.
