Abstract

Christians social justice has been a significant and complicated subject between evangelism and ecumenicalism for a long time. No one could disagree that scripture commands help the poor and oppressed in our society, however it is still highly debated today and occasionally ignored. But if we are a biblical Christian, we have to participate in social service activities and care for the poor and oppressed. Since the International Congress on World Evangelization was held in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974, although there was a vigorous debate between evangelism and ecumenicalism, it was gradually decreased, and they seek to improve relationships for Holistic ministry. In view of Holistic ministry, the evangelical church must assume the social responsibility that comes multiple fold. As combining social justice with evangelism, it is necessary to have an additional discussion that have to be considered from local, regional, national, and international levels. In this article, I suggest that it is necessary to examine matters in a larger perspective than in the discussion of traditional social justice. It reviews these issues by offering proposals for prospective of christians social justice. First of all, Because each of us has contributed to the pain, suffering, and decay in the world, we have to serve with a posture of gratitude and humility, acknowledging our brokenness before the cross of Jesus Christ. We have to care for the poor and oppressed, pray together, and share a charity and grace of God with them in christian community. The church is God's plan for saving the world which includes redeeming its broken social structure. Secondly, it seek to explore the patterns of homogeneity and heterogeneity of social service activities that appear between the Old Testament and the New Testament. There are already many institutional strategies to help and support poor people in Israel. These institutions, such as, gleaning, debt cancelation, sabbatical year, year of jubilee, tithing, etc, were reasonable solutions in those days because poor people also could become financially independent by themselves for a living. Especially, gleaning and debt cancelation have to be considered to be a systematic framework which helps people feel a sense of responsibility and rewarding in our society. Finally, it follows an emerging tendency in comparative theological researches by seeking to give a highly integrated view of christians social justice that provides a clear framework. There are many controversies of the effectiveness by expanding the range of christian social service activities without sharing the Gospel so that it has a thorough grasp of substantial continuous and systematic measures of christian social justice. In fact, without sharing the hope and good news of the Gospel, Holistic ministry lacks the transformative power of Holy Spirit. Neither side of social service activities is complete without sharing the Gospel. Therefore, it is necessary to give a highly integrated view on Christians social justice without conflicting with the existing social justice in a larger perspective. It would build a conceptual framework of christians social justice, and provide an institutional strategy of gleaning, debt cancelation, and make detailed plans in our social service activity system.
